Buying a Wedding dress in the Philippines

They say you can have a grand wedding in the Philippines for a fraction of the normal cost than if you were to do in the USA or Europe. I absolutely agree.

Yesterday, my cousin and her husband told me that they are planning for a church wedding in January. She knows I have an unnatural love for party and event planning, so she is counting on me to help her.

To give you an idea of my some special powers, picture a beautiful beach wedding. 200 guests, beach resort, rooms, buffet, flowers, red carpet, wedding arch, the whole nine. We spent a total of Php 55,000 or roughly $1250 for our wedding. I will write about that soon, but in the meantime, you are welcome to ask me anything about it. Here is a picture from that big day. It was supposed to rain that day, but God was on my side and it didn’t (*wink).

Getting married in the Philippines is a great idea. It helps you cut cost and you can still enjoy a romantic honeymoon without breaking the bank.

Unfortunately, not everything comes easy there. Anyone who has been to a fully developed country and then comes back to the Philippines will get frustrated. Service is slow, and there is really no process in place for even the simplest task. Here’s a big advantage though, you can pay your way to almost anything. Shameful, I know. But sometimes, you just have to do what you need to do.

Back to the topic at hand. Getting married in the Philippines is fairly easy to do. First, let me help you pick that one special dress you will use as you float down the aisle like an angel. Here are tips on buying a Wedding dress in the Philippines.

1. Determine your budget

Are you planning on splurging for this dress, or are you one of those who will even consider a rental just to save money?

I know I can’t stress this enough, but, DO NOT RENT A WEDDING DRESS/GOWN.  Why you ask? Because they don’t clean it after every rental. You don’t want to risk catching anything before the big day.

If your budget is up there and you don’t mind shelling out Php 100k to Php 200k on a wedding dress, then please, by all means, stop reading.  If you want an affordable, equally as beautiful gown, keep on reading.

2. Gather your bridesmaids

They are here to help you on your big event, ask them for assistance. Besides, it’s more fun shopping with your girlfriends.

3. Head down to Divisoria in Manila, dress appropriately

As we all know, bride’s gown has been the centerpiece of a wedding event. Practicality doesn’t mean we can’t afford them. There are other great wedding couturiers in the Philippines who can produce the same quality but on a lower price scale. Doesn’t matter if you are from Cebu, Bacolod, or Cagayan de Oro. You need to do this to find that perfect dress. Don’t think that just because they are Divisoria gowns, they will be of poor quality. Some of them are actually very well made.

I personally shopped at Tutuban mall where most of the gown merchants gathered. Unfortunately, it burned down a while back and the store owners moved their shop at the bottom of the Lucky 999 mall or inside 168 mall. I highly recommend Lucky 999.

4. Haggle! Haggle! Haggle!

The merchants know you are there to buy. Be careful you don’t show your enthusiasm from the get go. Play hard to get.

When I bought my gown, it was priced at Php 7,000 ($160), and it came with the veil, gloves, chord, ring pillow, etc. It came with an entire wedding set. They even threw in some glitter headwear. I knew right away, there was a wiggle room in there. So I haggled it down to Php 4000 (less than $100). I did not budge and I refused to leave until I get the dress. Finally, she agreed to give it to me for Php 4500 ($100).

My gown was so beautiful. Everybody thought I bought it for over $1000. The gown had a very long trail and embroidered with gorgeous design and red beads.
